A Chiron return is the moment Chiron comes back to the exact zodiac degree it held at your birth. For every birth date from 1900 to 1980, the first exact pass fell between ages 48.4 and 50.9, and the last between 50.0 and 51.7, so the popular “around 50” is a window rather than a day, and the exact age depends on your birth year. For people with natal Chiron in Aries or Pisces that window can hold five exact passes over as long as 19.5 months. This guide gives the measured age for every birth year, who has a Chiron return in 2026 to 2030, and why Chiron’s lopsided orbit changes the shape of the return but hardly its timing.
Key takeaways
- Across 29,585 birth dates from 1900 to 1980, the first exact Chiron return came between ages 48.4 and 50.9 (average 49.9). Only 5% of first passes came at 48, 44% at 49 and 51% at 50; none came at 51 or later.
- The number of passes depends on the sign Chiron was in at your birth: 84% of people with natal Chiron in Virgo and 88% in Libra get one pass, while 25% in Pisces and 33% in Aries get five, spread over up to 19.5 months.
- Chiron’s orbit is uneven (JPL: 8.49 to 18.9 au from the Sun), yet the average first-return age by natal sign only ranges from 49.7 to 50.4. Unevenness changes how many times Chiron crosses your degree, not how old you are when it starts.
- People born from about May 1974 to April 1981 have a Chiron return in 2026 to 2030. Someone born June 15, 1977, with Chiron at 4°29′ Taurus, has five passes between July 19, 2027 and February 17, 2029.
- The meaning of a Chiron return is modern astrological tradition, offered for reflection, not a prediction or medical advice.

What a Chiron return is
Chiron is a small icy body that circles the Sun between Saturn and Uranus, discovered in 1977 and read in astrology as a lasting wound that can become a source of insight; our Chiron guide covers the sign and house meanings. NASA’s JPL Small-Body Database gives its orbit an eccentricity of 0.38, a closest approach of 8.49 au and a farthest distance of 18.9 au, with a period of about 18,500 days, or 50.7 years. When transiting Chiron reaches the sign and degree it occupied at your birth, astrologers call it your Chiron return, in the same way the Saturn return marks Saturn’s comeback near 29 and the Jupiter return its comeback every 12 years.
The ages below are measured, not quoted. For every birth date from January 1, 1900 to December 31, 1980 (29,585 days) we computed Chiron’s position at noon Universal Time with the Swiss Ephemeris, found every day Chiron crossed that degree from about age 25 onward, and grouped the crossings into returns. We checked Chiron’s longitude against NASA’s JPL Horizons system on eight dates from 1820 to 2250 and at the instants of five example passes; they agree to better than 0.0005°.
At what age is your Chiron return?
Between 48 and 52, but the first exact pass is earlier than most guides suggest. The first pass fell between 48.38 and 50.87 years for all 29,585 birth dates, averaging 49.88 with a median of 50.01. It came before the 50th birthday for 49% of birth dates, in the year you are 50 for 51%, and never at 51. The popular “50 to 52” describes the whole window better than the first pass: the last exact pass fell between 50.00 and 51.70 (average 50.65), and 21.5% of last passes came after the 51st birthday.
The two numbers people quote also differ from the physics. JPL’s period is 50.7 years, but we measured Sun-centred returns of 50.0 to 50.4 years for 17 birth dates sampled every five years from 1900 to 1980. The Earth-centred first pass that astrologers use averages 49.9, because we watch Chiron from a moving Earth. A moving observer shifts Chiron’s apparent position by up to several degrees, which Chiron, creeping near some parts of its orbit, can take months to cover. The same effect is behind the age scatter of the Uranus opposition and the Jupiter return.
Chiron return age by birth year, 1900 to 1980
Find your birth year. The ages are the first exact pass across all days of that year, so the range is the span between the earliest and latest birthday. The last column shows the calendar years in which those first passes fall. Share of passes shows the percentage of that year’s birth dates with 1, 3 or 5 exact passes. Chiron’s sign is its position at noon UT on each birth date, so a year with two signs is the year it changed sign.

Two patterns stand out. First, people born from 1944 to 1947 get the latest and tightest returns, a first pass between 50.1 and 50.8, because their natal Chiron was in Virgo, Libra or Scorpio. Second, people born from 1911 to 1930 and from 1968 to 1975 can have a first pass as early as 48.4, because their natal Chiron was in Pisces, Aries or Taurus, where five-pass returns begin early.
One pass, three or five: why your natal sign matters
Chiron’s orbit is far more lopsided than any planet’s. It reaches only 8.5 au from the Sun near its closest point and 18.9 au at its farthest, and it moves fastest near the first and slowest near the second. In the passages from 1918 to 2027 our Chiron guide found it spent about 8.3 years in Aries but 1.6 to 2 years in Virgo or Libra. That uneven pace sets how many times it crosses your degree. Seen from Earth, any outer body seems to move backward for part of each year, the same effect covered in our Mercury retrograde guide. Where Chiron is moving slowly, that backward swing exceeds its forward drift, so it crosses your degree forward, backward, forward again, and sometimes twice more.

Overall, 17% of birth dates have one pass, 69% have three and 14% have five. A return is never two or four. The window from first to last pass averages 9.2 months, is under a month for 17%, and reaches a year or more for 14%. The five-pass returns, which belong to natal Chiron in Pisces, Aries, Taurus and a sliver of Aquarius, average 19.2 months. The three-pass returns average 9.6 months.
The same table shows that the unevenness barely moves the age: the average first pass is 49.7 for Aries and Pisces and 50.4 for Virgo, Libra and Scorpio. One online calculator page, updated in July 2026, lists typical return ages of 47 to 49 for Virgo and 50 to 52 for Pisces. For births from 1900 to 1980 we measured the opposite: the first pass for natal Chiron in Virgo fell between 50.1 and 50.8 and for Pisces between 48.4 and 50.9. The page may define its ages differently, but it does not match this data.
A worked example with five exact passes
Take someone born June 15, 1977 at noon UT (8:00 a.m. EDT), with natal Chiron at 4°29′ Taurus. Chiron crosses that degree on July 19, 2027 (12:44 a.m. EDT, age 50.09), August 27, 2027 (11:10 p.m. EDT, 50.20), April 28, 2028 (7:01 a.m. EDT, 50.87), December 8, 2028 (8:49 a.m. EST, 51.48) and February 17, 2029 (11:09 a.m. EST, 51.68). That is one return of five passes spread over 19 months, ending at the 51.7 maximum we found. We checked the first pass against JPL Horizons: Chiron’s longitude there matches the natal value to 0.0002°.

Two shorter examples show the other shapes. Someone born June 1, 1945, with Chiron at 27°00′ Virgo, has a single pass on August 18, 1995 (6:17 p.m. EDT, age 50.21). Someone born March 3, 1962, with Chiron at 6°44′ Pisces, has three: March 19, 2012, September 11, 2012 and January 15, 2013, at 50.05, 50.53 and 50.87. Each example assumes a noon UT birth, so a real birth time can move a pass by several days when Chiron is near a station.
Who is having a Chiron return in 2026 to 2030
Chiron is at about 28°55′ Aries as of October 14, 2026, retrograde and heading back toward the start of Aries. Each calendar year touches three separate groups of birth dates, as the table shows. The second column lists birth dates whose first exact pass falls in that year; the third gives the full span of birth dates with any exact pass in that year, including the second to fifth passes of people whose return began earlier.

The birth dates that have an exact pass between 2026 and 2030 run from May 1974 to April 1981, though not every birth date in that span has a pass in these particular years. Their natal Chiron was in Aries or Taurus, so most get three or five passes. A person born May 20, 1976, with Chiron at 29°34′ Aries, has passes on June 9, 2026 (age 50.05), September 28, 2026 (50.36) and April 7, 2027 (50.88): two have happened and one is still ahead. Birth dates use the noon UT position, so someone born within a day of a boundary should check their birth time.
If you were born after 1980
The same calculation gives first-pass calendar years of 2030 to 2032 for people born in 1981, 2034 to 2036 for 1985, 2039 to 2041 for 1990, 2045 to 2046 for 1995, 2050 to 2051 for 2000, 2055 to 2056 for 2005 and 2059 to 2061 for 2010. The 1994 to 2014 US birth counts from the CDC and Social Security Administration cover 85.4 million births. Applying our calculation to them, 37.4% will have one pass, 60.6% three and 2.0% five, because their natal Chiron was in Virgo through Pisces, never in Aries or Taurus. Their first return arrives between 2044 and 2065, at an average age of 50.1.

Aquarius holds 26.7% of those births, since Chiron was there from late 2005 to early 2011, with short stays in Pisces and Capricorn at the edges. Only the year range 1994 to 2014 is covered by US birth data; we did not estimate earlier generations. These are model calculations decades ahead, and the further out, the less certain Chiron’s orbit becomes.
Why guides disagree: 46 to 52 years
Guides quote anything from 46 to 53 because Chiron’s return age is not constant over time. Astrologer Zane B. Stein wrote in an essay excerpted from his 1985 book:
“Chiron has an unusual orbit, which is known to change throughout time. In the past, it has occasionally been as short as 46 years, or as long as 52 years.”
Zane B. Stein, “The Chiron Return”, excerpted from Essence and Application: A View From Chiron (1985)
We tested that statement by sampling first passes for 18,263 birth dates from 1800 to 2299, one every ten days. The first pass ranged from 46.3 to 50.9 years, averaging 49.0, and the average fell from 50.0 for births around 1950 to 2049 to 47.3 for births around 2250 to 2299. So the 46-year end of his statement shows up in our data, but only for births far in the future, and the 1900 to 1980 births reach 50.9 at most. Different eras, and different definitions of “return”, explain much of the disagreement.

The later blocks depend more heavily on the orbit model, because small errors in Chiron’s orbit grow over centuries. We cross-checked it against JPL Horizons on dates in 1820, 1869, 2105 and 2250 and found agreement to better than 0.0005°, but that tests the positions, not the long-term orbit.
What astrologers say a Chiron return means
No ancient astrologer used Chiron, so there is no old tradition to quote; every reading is modern. Most describe the return as a midlife homecoming: the wound found in the natal chart is revisited with more perspective and can become something you give to others. Stein, who put it at about 50, described the idea this way:

“In other words, at the time of the Chiron return, the person is in effect coming home.”
Zane B. Stein, “The Chiron Return”, 1985 excerpt
Other current guides divide the return into stages. One page on the Kerykeion learning site, last updated July 19, 2026, calls ages 47 to 49 the approach, about 50 the exact return and 51 to 53 the completion. Our measurement places the first pass between 48.4 and 50.9 and the last between 50.0 and 51.7, so the stages are wider than the exact passes.
As for evidence, no study has linked a planetary return to events in people’s lives. The best-known US survey on the “midlife crisis” tested beliefs, not planets, and noted:
“Despite the identification of this term with male personality development, women were as likely as men to report having had a midlife crisis. In addition, crises occurring well before age 40 and well after age 50 were frequently nominated as midlife crises.”
Elaine Wethington, “Expecting Stress: Americans and the ‘Midlife Crisis,'” Motivation and Emotion 24(2), 2000
Treat the Chiron return as a prompt for reflection, not a forecast. It is not medical or psychological advice, and if a wound from your past feels heavy, a qualified professional is the place to take it. Chiron’s comparison with Black Moon Lilith and the North Node is in our Chiron guide.
How to find your own Chiron return
First, find your natal Chiron: the sign and degree on a chart from our birth chart calculator will do, or use the sign tables in the Chiron guide. Second, look up your birth year in the table above to get the age range and the calendar years. Third, for the exact days, use any ephemeris that lists Chiron’s longitude by date and find the days it equals your natal degree. Remember to expect one, three or five. Fourth, if your Chiron was in Aries or Pisces at birth, expect a long window, and treat the first pass as the start of it.
Frequently asked questions
At what age is the Chiron return?
Between 48 and 52, with the first exact pass between 48.4 and 50.9 for birth dates from 1900 to 1980 and the last between 50.0 and 51.7. The average first pass is 49.9.
Is the Chiron return at age 50?
Roughly. The first pass comes before the 50th birthday for 49% of birth dates and in the year you are 50 for 51%. Chiron’s orbit is 50.7 years, but the Earth-centred return averages 49.9.
How many times does Chiron return?
Once in a lifetime, but it can cross your natal degree one, three or five times as it moves backward and forward. Never two or four.
Who is having a Chiron return in 2026?
People born from about May 1974 to April 1977, with some gaps, have an exact pass in 2026, including those born June 14 to September 19, 1975 and April 9 to June 15, 1976 for their first pass.
How long does a Chiron return last?
An exact pass is a single day. The span from first to last pass averages 9.2 months, is zero for one-pass returns and reaches up to 19.5 months for five-pass returns.
Why do guides say 46, 49, 50 or 52?
Chiron’s return age varies by birth era. From 1800 to 2299 we measured 46.3 to 50.9 for the first pass; for 1900 to 1980 births it is 48.4 to 50.9.
Is the Chiron return a midlife crisis?
Astrologers read it as a midlife turning point. A US survey found 26% of 724 adults reported a midlife crisis, at ages that were widely spread, and it did not test planets.
When is my Chiron return if I was born in 1990?
The first exact pass falls between August 25, 2039 and August 3, 2041, depending on your birthday. Born January 1, 1990 at noon UT, with Chiron at 13°48′ Cancer, the pass is June 27, 2040.
