Venus Sign: What It Means and How to Find Yours

Your Venus sign is your Sun sign or within two signs of it, but usually not your Sun sign. The real odds from 100 years of NASA data, all 12 Venus signs and dates for 1950-2030.

Bar chart title card: the five possible Venus signs for any Sun sign and how often each occurs

Your Venus sign is the zodiac sign the planet Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it describes how you love, what attracts you and what you value. Because Venus never gets more than about 47° from the Sun, it is always in your Sun sign or one of the two signs on either side. What most guides leave out is that it is usually not your Sun sign: we counted 100 years of NASA data, and Venus shares the Sun’s sign less than a quarter of the time.

Key takeaways

  • Your Venus sign is read as your style in love, attraction, taste and money, alongside your Sun, Moon and Rising signs.
  • Venus is never more than about 47° from the Sun, so only five Venus signs are possible for any Sun sign: your own and the two on each side.
  • Across 1926–2025, Venus was in the Sun’s own sign on just 23.6% of days, one sign away on 58.4%, and two signs away on 18.0%. For 10 of the 12 Sun signs, the most likely Venus sign is a neighbor, not the Sun sign itself.
  • Venus usually spends about 25 days in a sign, but anything from a few days to 126 days in years when it turns retrograde, which happens about every 19 months.
  • Venus turns retrograde on October 3, 2026, back into Libra, and turns direct on November 14, 2026.
  • Astrology is a cultural tradition presented here for reflection. Nothing on this page is relationship, financial or psychological advice.

What a Venus sign is

A birth chart places every planet in one of the twelve zodiac signs. Your Sun sign is the one most people know. Your Venus sign is simply where Venus was on the same day. In modern astrology Venus is the planet of attraction and pleasure, so its sign is read as your love language in the broadest sense: how you show affection, the kind of person you are drawn to, what you find beautiful, and how you treat money and comfort.

That reading has deep roots. In Claudius Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos (2nd century AD), one of the most influential astrology books ever written, Venus is one of the two “beneficent” planets, the gentle counterpart to Jupiter:

“Venus has the same powers and tempered nature as Jupiter, but acts in the opposite way; for she warms moderately because of her nearness to the sun, but chiefly humidifies, like the moon.”

— Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos I.4, trans. F. E. Robbins (Loeb Classical Library, 1940)

“Warm” and “moist” were the qualities Greek writers associated with life, growth and fertility, which is why Venus became the planet of love and enjoyment. Our guide to Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos explains how that book fixed much of the astrology still used today.

How to find your Venus sign

You need your birth date. Your birth time only matters if you were born on a day when Venus changed signs, and Venus changes sign only about 12 or 13 times a year. There are three ways to look it up:

  1. Use the year-by-year table on this page. Our Venus sign dates for 1950–2030 list every sign change, calculated to the minute with the Swiss Ephemeris and checked against the published Astrodienst table. Find your birth year, then the last change before your birthday.
  2. Use the five-sign shortcut below. If you only know your Sun sign, the next section shows the five possible Venus signs and how likely each one is.
  3. Use a full ephemeris. Astrodienst publishes a free table of every Venus sign change from 1900 to 2036, with times. Our own Birth Chart calculator currently gives your Sun, Moon and Rising signs, not Venus.

All dates in our table are in Universal Time (UT), the time zone of Greenwich, England. If you were born in the US on a change date, especially in the evening, convert your birth time to UT first: Eastern time is 4 or 5 hours behind UT, and Pacific time is 7 or 8 hours behind.

Which Venus signs are possible for your Sun sign

Venus orbits inside Earth’s orbit, so from Earth it never appears far from the Sun. Over 1926–2025, NASA/JPL’s Horizons system puts the greatest angle between them at 45.4° to 47.3°, and the largest gap along the zodiac at 47.2°. Since a sign is 30° wide, Venus can only be in your Sun sign or within two signs of it. Five Venus signs are possible for each Sun sign.

Every guide says that much. None says how likely each of the five is, so we counted. For every day from 1926 to 2025, we took the Sun’s sign and Venus’s sign from NASA/JPL Horizons and cross-checked them against the Swiss Ephemeris. The two sources agree within 0.3 percentage points:

Sun sign 2 signs before 1 sign before Same sign 1 sign after 2 signs after
Aries Aquarius 10% Pisces 26% Aries 28% Taurus 26% Gemini 9%
Taurus Pisces 8% Aries 34% Taurus 20% Gemini 30% Cancer 8%
Gemini Aries 10% Taurus 26% Gemini 26% Cancer 29% Leo 8%
Cancer Taurus 8% Gemini 34% Cancer 22% Leo 28% Virgo 9%
Leo Gemini 10% Cancer 28% Leo 23% Virgo 33% Libra 7%
Virgo Cancer 8% Leo 30% Virgo 26% Libra 25% Scorpio 10%
Libra Leo 9% Virgo 31% Libra 20% Scorpio 33% Sagittarius 8%
Scorpio Virgo 10% Libra 25% Scorpio 29% Sagittarius 26% Capricorn 10%
Sagittarius Libra 8% Scorpio 33% Sagittarius 21% Capricorn 28% Aquarius 10%
Capricorn Scorpio 11% Sagittarius 25% Capricorn 23% Aquarius 32% Pisces 9%
Aquarius Sagittarius 9% Capricorn 30% Aquarius 26% Pisces 25% Aries 11%
Pisces Capricorn 9% Aquarius 31% Pisces 20% Aries 33% Taurus 7%

Bold marks the most likely Venus sign for each Sun sign. Three things stand out. First, only Aries and Scorpio Suns are most likely to have Venus in their own sign. Second, no Sun sign shares its sign with Venus as much as 30% of the time: the range runs from about 20% for Pisces and Libra to 29% for Scorpio. Third, two signs away is always the least likely, at 7% to 11%. These are shares of calendar days. Births are not spread perfectly evenly through the year, so the shares for people will differ slightly.

Why Venus is usually not in your Sun sign

The reason is how Venus moves as seen from Earth. It swings out to one side of the Sun, slows down and seems to hang there for weeks near its greatest distance, then sweeps quickly back past the Sun to the other side. Astronomers call those turning points greatest elongation, and they are when Venus is easiest to see as the “evening star” or “morning star”.

NASA SDO photo sequence of Venus crossing the face of the Sun as a row of black dots during the June 2012 transit

So Venus spends more time far from the Sun than near it. Here is the share of days in 1926–2025 at each distance:

Distance between Venus and the Sun Share of days
0° to 10° 15.4%
10° to 20° 16.0%
20° to 30° 17.3%
30° to 40° 21.2%
40° to 47° 30.2%

More than half the time, Venus is over 30° from the Sun, a full sign’s width away. That is why a neighboring sign wins for most people. It is also why the familiar shortcut, “your Venus sign is probably your Sun sign”, is the least reliable guess you can make after the two-signs-away options.

How long Venus stays in one sign

On a normal pass, Venus takes about 25 days to cross a sign (the median stay in 1926–2025 was 25 days). Pages that quote a fixed range, such as “four to five weeks”, miss the exceptions. When Venus turns retrograde, it appears to move backward for about six weeks, and the sign it is in at the time can hold it for months. The longest continuous stay in our 100-year count was 126 days. The shortest were brief re-crossings of just a few days, where a retrograde Venus dips back over a sign boundary and then returns.

Retrograde periods follow Venus’s synodic period, the time it takes to return to the same position relative to the Sun as seen from Earth. NASA’s Venus fact sheet gives it as 583.92 days, about 19 months, and we counted 63 retrograde stations in the 100 years from 1926. Five of those 584-day cycles add up to almost exactly eight years, which is why Venus repeats its pattern every eight years. The five points where Venus passes between Earth and the Sun trace a five-pointed star around the zodiac: Aries in 2017, Scorpio in 2018, Gemini in 2020, Capricorn in 2022, Leo in 2023, and Aries again in 2025, about two and a half degrees earlier. Mercury has a similar but faster rhythm, covered in our Mercury retrograde guide.

Venus retrograde in 2026

Venus is about to turn retrograde, so here are the exact dates, calculated with the Swiss Ephemeris (checked October 2, 2026):

Date (UT) What happens
September 10, 2026 Venus enters Scorpio
October 3, 2026, about 08:00 Venus turns retrograde at 8°29′ Scorpio
October 25, 2026 Venus moves back into Libra
November 14, 2026, about 01:00 Venus turns direct at 22°51′ Libra (evening of November 13 in US time zones)
December 4, 2026 Venus re-enters Scorpio
January 7, 2027 Venus enters Sagittarius

The practical consequence for Venus signs: babies born between September 10, 2026 and January 7, 2027 will all have Venus in Scorpio or Libra, a stretch of almost four months covering parts of five Sun signs. In the tradition, a Venus retrograde is read as a time to revisit relationships, values and spending rather than start something new, and people born with Venus retrograde are said to take longer to trust in love. As with any reading here, treat it as reflection, not instruction. Our full guide to Venus retrograde in 2026 covers the shadow period, the overlap with Mercury and every Venus retrograde to 2034.

Where Venus is strongest and weakest

Traditional astrology ranks how comfortable each planet is in each sign, a system called essential dignity. Ptolemy gave Venus two “houses”, the signs she rules: “To Venus, which is temperate and beneath Mars, were given the next two signs, which are extremely fertile, Libra and Taurus” (Tetrabiblos I.17). He also gave her an exaltation, a sign where she is especially strong, in Pisces, and a “depression”, in the opposite sign, Virgo (I.19). Later astrologers added detriment, the signs opposite a planet’s houses.

Condition Signs Traditional meaning
Domicile (rulership) Taurus, Libra Venus is “at home”: sensual and steady in Taurus, social and harmonious in Libra
Exaltation Pisces Venus at her most idealistic and devoted
Detriment Aries, Scorpio Opposite her houses; love expressed with more urgency or intensity
Fall (“depression”) Virgo Opposite her exaltation; love shown through care and critique rather than romance

So if you have been asked which sign Venus is “bad” in, the traditional answer is Virgo, with Aries and Scorpio as the other difficult placements. That is a statement about the planet’s style, not about the people born with it. A Venus in Scorpio is not weaker at loving, just more intense about it. The same logic answers the popular question about the “most attractive” Venus signs: tradition has no ranking of attractiveness, but it does treat Venus in Taurus, Libra and Pisces as Venus expressing herself most easily.

Venus in each of the 12 signs

The readings below are the ones that recur across astrological writing, from traditional dignities to modern interpretation. They describe themes, not fixed traits or predictions, and they mix with the rest of your chart.

Grid of the 12 Venus signs grouped by fire, earth, air and water, each with a short note on how it traditionally loves
The 12 Venus signs at a glance, grouped by element. Diagram: Numyra.

Venus in Aries

Fire, and in detriment. Venus in Aries falls in love fast and says so. It is attracted to confidence and a bit of a chase, likes to make the first move, and can lose interest once the pursuit is over. In taste and money it tends toward the bold and the new, bought on impulse. The traditional caution is impatience: wanting the relationship to move at the speed of the attraction.

Venus in Taurus

Earth, and Venus at home. This is one of the most comfortable placements in the tradition: loyal, physical and slow to commit but steady once it does. Love is shown through time, touch, food and reliability. Taste runs to quality materials and things that last, and money is treated as security. The caution is possessiveness and resistance to change.

Venus in Gemini

Air. Venus in Gemini needs conversation as much as romance: the partner who keeps it curious, laughing and talking wins. It enjoys variety in people, ideas and style, and flirts with words. The traditional caution is restlessness, and a tendency to keep things light when the moment needs depth.

Venus in Cancer

Water. Venus in Cancer loves protectively and wants a home with the person it loves. It is drawn to kindness and emotional safety more than glamour, remembers anniversaries, and shows affection by looking after people. Taste is nostalgic and comfortable. The caution is moodiness and hurt feelings that go unspoken.

Venus in Leo

Fire. Venus in Leo is warm, generous and theatrical in love: grand gestures, loyalty and a wish to be adored in return. It is attracted to people who shine and who make it feel special. Taste runs to the dramatic and luxurious. The caution is pride, and needing more reassurance than it likes to admit.

Venus in Virgo

Earth, and in fall. Venus in Virgo shows love by being useful: fixing things, remembering details, turning up. It is attracted to competence and to people it can help, and it can be shy about romance itself. Taste is refined and practical, with an eye for craftsmanship. The traditional caution is criticism meant as care that lands as judgment.

Venus in Libra

Air, and Venus at home. This is the partnership placement: romantic, courteous and happiest in a relationship of equals. It is drawn to beauty, good manners and balance, and has a natural eye for design. The caution is people-pleasing, keeping the peace at the cost of saying what it wants.

Venus in Scorpio

Water, and in detriment. Venus in Scorpio loves all or nothing: private, intense, loyal and slow to trust. It is attracted to depth and a little mystery, and it wants to know a partner completely. Taste runs dark and powerful. The traditional caution is jealousy and a long memory for betrayal.

Venus in Sagittarius

Fire. Venus in Sagittarius wants love to be an adventure: honest, funny and full of travel, ideas and room to roam. It is attracted to people with a different background or a big philosophy. Money and taste lean toward experiences over things. The caution is a fear of being fenced in.

Venus in Capricorn

Earth. Venus in Capricorn takes love seriously and plays a long game, showing commitment through effort and plans for the future. It is attracted to ambition, maturity and reliability. Taste is classic and understated, and money is managed carefully. The caution is reserve that looks like coldness, or work that crowds out romance.

Venus in Aquarius

Air. Venus in Aquarius is a friend first and a partner second: loyal, unconventional and in need of independence inside a relationship. It is drawn to originality and minds that surprise it. Taste is modern or offbeat. The caution is seeming detached just when a partner wants warmth.

Venus in Pisces

Water, and in exaltation. Venus in Pisces is the most romantic placement in the tradition: compassionate, devoted and imaginative, feeling a partner’s moods as its own. It is drawn to sensitivity, art and music. The caution is idealizing a partner, or losing itself in the relationship.

Reading Venus with your Sun, Moon and Rising

Your Venus sign does not replace your Sun sign; it adds to it. In the usual reading, the Sun describes your core identity, the Moon your emotional needs and the Rising sign your outward manner, as explained in our guide to the difference between Sun, Moon and Rising. Venus narrows the focus to love, attraction and taste. A Leo Sun with Venus in Virgo, a common pairing at 33% of Leo days, is often read as someone big-hearted in public but careful and practical in private affection.

Element is the quickest way to read the mix. Venus in a fire sign leads with enthusiasm, earth with steadiness, air with conversation and water with feeling, as covered in our guide to the four elements and three modalities. For relationships, astrologers also compare one person’s Venus with the other’s Mars, Moon and Sun, a deeper method than matching Sun signs alone; our article on how zodiac compatibility really works explains the difference.

Venus in the oldest astrology

Venus was being tracked for omens long before the Greeks. The British Museum holds a Neo-Assyrian clay tablet from the Library of Ashurbanipal at Nineveh, which its curators describe as containing “astrological forecasts, a copy of the so-called Venus Tablet of Ammisaduqa” (object K.160). The Venus Tablet records when Venus appeared and disappeared as the morning and evening star, and pairs each observation with an omen. Scholars date the original observations to the reign of the Babylonian king Ammisaduqa in the second millennium BC.

Ptolemy’s Venus, the moderate, warming, “beneficent” planet, comes out of that long observational tradition. Ptolemy also notes that the ancients accepted “Jupiter and Venus, together with the moon, as beneficent because of their tempered nature” (I.5). The modern idea of a personal Venus sign as your love language is much newer, a product of 20th-century popular astrology, but the planet’s association with love, beauty and fertility is one of the oldest in the subject.

Frequently asked questions

What is my Venus sign?

It is the sign Venus was in on your birth date. Find your birth year in our Venus sign dates table and read the last sign change before your birthday. If you only know your Sun sign, Venus is in that sign or one of the two signs on either side.

What is your Venus sign for?

In astrology, it describes how you love and what attracts you: your romantic style, what you find beautiful, what you value, and how you treat pleasure and money. It is read alongside your Sun, Moon and Rising signs rather than instead of them.

Is Venus your love sign?

It is the planet most associated with love, so many people call it that. Astrologers also look at Mars (desire), the Moon (emotional needs) and the 7th house (partnership) before drawing conclusions about relationships.

Can Venus be in the same sign as the Sun?

Yes. From 1926 to 2025, Venus was in the Sun’s own sign on 23.6% of days. It was one sign away on 58.4% of days and two signs away on 18.0%, so a neighboring sign is the more common result.

Can Venus be opposite my Sun sign?

No. Venus is never more than about 47° from the Sun as seen from Earth, so it can never be in the opposite sign, 180° away. It can only be in your Sun sign or up to two signs either side.

Which zodiac sign is Venus considered bad in?

Traditionally Virgo, where Venus is in “fall” (Ptolemy’s “depression”), and Aries and Scorpio, where she is in “detriment”. These describe the planet’s style, not anyone’s worth as a partner.

What are the most attractive Venus signs?

Astrology has no ranking of attractiveness. Tradition does consider Venus most at ease in Taurus and Libra, the signs she rules, and Pisces, where she is exalted.

How long does Venus stay in one sign?

Usually about 25 days. In a retrograde year it can stay much longer: in 1926–2025 the longest continuous stay was 126 days. Venus turns retrograde about every 19 months.

When is Venus retrograde in 2026?

From October 3, 2026 (at 8°29′ Scorpio) to November 14, 2026 UT (at 22°51′ Libra), which is the evening of November 13 in US time zones. Venus moves back into Libra on October 25.
