Jupiter Sign: What It Means and How to Find Yours by Birth Date

What your Jupiter sign means, every Jupiter sign change from 1940 to 2030 in Eastern time, why Jupiter lingers in some signs, and when your Jupiter return falls.

Title card for a Jupiter sign guide with a bar chart of how many days Jupiter spends in each zodiac sign

Your Jupiter sign is the zodiac sign Jupiter was in when you were born. Astrologers read it as where you grow, find meaning and tend to get lucky. Jupiter takes almost twelve years to circle the zodiac, so it stays about a year in each sign: anyone born within the same twelve months or so shares a Jupiter sign. Find yours in the table of every Jupiter sign change from 1940 to 2030 below.

Key takeaways

  • You only need your birth date to find your Jupiter sign. A birth time matters only if you were born on one of the days Jupiter changed sign.
  • Jupiter does not spend equal time in every sign. Its slightly oval orbit keeps it about 396 days in Virgo but only about 320 in Aries (Swiss Ephemeris, 1900–2099).
  • Tradition makes Jupiter strongest in Sagittarius and Pisces (its homes) and Cancer (its exaltation), and weakest in Gemini, Virgo and Capricorn.
  • Jupiter returns to your Jupiter sign about every 11.9 years, at ages near 12, 24, 36, 47 and 59. It is in Leo from June 30, 2026 to July 26, 2027.
  • Readings of each sign are an astrological tradition, offered for reflection, not as financial or life advice.

What your Jupiter sign means

Jupiter is traditionally the “greater benefic”, the more generous of astrology’s two helpful planets (Venus is the other). It is read as growth, optimism, generosity, faith, learning and opportunity, and also as excess, because Jupiter enlarges whatever it touches. Your Jupiter sign describes the style of that growth: where you are inclined to say yes, take a chance or look for meaning. Ptolemy gave the classic reason for Jupiter’s mild reputation:

“Jupiter has a temperate active force because his movement takes place between the cooling influence of Saturn and the burning power of Mars.”

Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos, Book I, chapter 4, trans. F. E. Robbins (1940)

Because Jupiter moves slowly, it is often called a social planet: it describes a shared mood of everyone born in the same year more than one personality. Astrologers make it personal through its house and its contacts with your other placements, which needs a full chart. It sits beside the personal planets in a reading, after your Mercury, Venus and Mars signs, and before Saturn, whose 29-year return astrologers read as its sterner counterpart.

How to find your Jupiter sign

Find the last date in the table below that falls on or before your birthday. The sign on that row is your Jupiter sign. For example, someone born on June 17, 1990 looks back to July 30, 1989, when Jupiter entered Cancer, and finds that it did not move on into Leo until August 18, 1990: their Jupiter sign is Cancer. You only need a birth time if you were born on the day of a change, and then only to see whether you were born before or after the time listed.

If you would rather not read a table, our stellium calculator lists the sign of Jupiter and every other planet for your birth date, and our birth chart calculator adds your Moon, rising sign and Midheaven.

Every time Jupiter entered a new sign, calculated by the Numyra Methodology Desk with the Swiss Ephemeris. Times are US Eastern (EST or EDT). On January 1, 1940, Jupiter was in Aries. Rows marked “retrograde” are the times Jupiter slipped back into the previous sign during a retrograde loop, which is why some years appear twice.

Why Jupiter stays longer in some signs

“About a year per sign” is only an average. Lilly put the round number in his 1647 textbook:

“In his Motion he exceeds Saturne, finishing his course through the twelve Signes in twelve yeeres”

William Lilly, Christian Astrology, London, 1647, chapter IX, p. 61

The precise figure, from NASA’s Jupiter fact sheet, is 4,330.6 days to return to the same point of the zodiac, or 11.86 years. But Jupiter’s orbit is slightly oval: it comes within 740.6 million km of the Sun at perihelion and swings out to 816.4 million km at aphelion. Planets move fastest when closest to the Sun, and Jupiter’s perihelion lies at about 15° Aries. So it hurries through Pisces, Aries and Taurus and slows down on the far side of its orbit, staying longest in the signs from Cancer to Sagittarius, Virgo most of all. Over the 200 years from 1900 to 2099, Jupiter spent:

Sign Days per visit, on average Share of all days, 1900–2099
Aries 320 7.4%
Taurus 327 7.5%
Gemini 347 8.0%
Cancer 374 8.6%
Leo 378 8.7%
Virgo 396 9.2%
Libra 383 8.8%
Scorpio 372 8.6%
Sagittarius 385 8.9%
Capricorn 363 8.4%
Aquarius 351 8.1%
Pisces 337 7.8%

Retrograde loops add to the time too: each year Jupiter appears to move backward for about four months, and when that loop straddles a sign boundary, Jupiter dips back into the previous sign before moving on. That is the same apparent backward motion behind Mercury retrograde.

Jupiter in each of the 12 signs

These are the common traditional readings, a starting point rather than a verdict. The sign’s ruler and your Jupiter’s house add detail, which is where a guide to the houses helps.

Jupiter in Aries

Jupiter in Aries is read as growth through courage and initiative. Generosity comes out direct and fast: this placement backs people, ideas and causes with energy, and luck is said to follow when it acts first. The traditional caution is overconfidence and impatience, starting more than it finishes. It is the sign where Jupiter moves fastest, staying about 320 days.

Jupiter in Taurus

Jupiter in Taurus is read as growth through patience, comfort and practical building. It is generous with food, time and material security, and is said to prosper by staying with things long enough for them to pay off. The traditional caution is indulgence and complacency: too much of a good thing, or holding on when change would help.

Jupiter in Gemini (detriment)

Jupiter in Gemini is read as growth through learning, conversation and variety: many interests, quick connections, a talent for explaining. Tradition places Jupiter in detriment here, because Gemini is opposite its home sign Sagittarius, and reads the risk as breadth over depth, collecting facts without settling on a philosophy.

Jupiter in Cancer (exaltation)

Tradition places Jupiter’s exaltation in Cancer, one of its strongest positions. It is read as generosity expressed through care, family and belonging: protective, nurturing, often the person who makes a house a home for others. The traditional caution is overprotectiveness, or giving so much emotionally that boundaries slip.

Jupiter in Leo

Jupiter in Leo is read as warm, big-hearted and expansive in self-expression: faith in oneself, a love of celebration, and generosity that is meant to be seen. It is said to grow by leading, creating and encouraging others. The traditional caution is pride and showiness. Jupiter is in Leo now, from June 30, 2026 to July 26, 2027.

Jupiter in Virgo (detriment)

Jupiter in Virgo is read as growth through skill, service and steady improvement: practical help, careful work and a talent for making things better. Tradition places Jupiter in detriment here, opposite its home sign Pisces, and reads the risk as losing the big picture in details or worrying instead of trusting. Jupiter spends longer in Virgo than in any other sign, about 396 days.

Jupiter in Libra

Jupiter in Libra is read as growth through partnership, fairness and beauty: a natural diplomat, generous socially, drawn to law, art and anything that brings people into agreement. The traditional caution is avoiding conflict at any price, or depending on others for direction.

Jupiter in Scorpio

Jupiter in Scorpio is read as growth through depth: research, shared resources, psychology and transformation. Its generosity is intense and loyal rather than broad. The traditional caution is all-or-nothing thinking and secrecy, but it is also read as unusually resilient, able to rebuild after loss.

Jupiter in Sagittarius (domicile)

Sagittarius is Jupiter’s own sign, and tradition reads Jupiter as at its strongest and most natural here: optimistic, adventurous, drawn to travel, teaching, philosophy and big ideas. It is the placement most often called “lucky”. The traditional caution is preachiness, overpromising and restlessness.

Jupiter in Capricorn (fall)

Tradition places Jupiter in its fall in Capricorn, opposite its exaltation in Cancer. That is read not as bad luck but as cautious expansion: success that comes through discipline, structure and earned authority rather than easy breaks. Growth is slower here but is read as solid and lasting.

Jupiter in Aquarius

Jupiter in Aquarius is read as growth through groups, ideas and reform: humanitarian, inventive, generous with friends and causes, and drawn to technology or science. The traditional caution is detachment or contrarianism, caring about humanity more easily than about the person in front of you.

Jupiter in Pisces (domicile)

Pisces is Jupiter’s traditional night house, the second of its two home signs, so tradition reads it as strong here too. It is read as compassion, imagination and faith: charitable, spiritual, artistic. Modern astrologers give Pisces to Neptune, but keep Jupiter as its traditional ruler. The caution is escapism and weak boundaries.

Where tradition says Jupiter is strongest

In the scoring system called essential dignities, Jupiter rules two signs, Sagittarius (its day house) and Pisces (its night house), is exalted in Cancer, is in detriment in Gemini and Virgo, the signs opposite its homes, and falls in Capricorn, opposite its exaltation. Lilly tabulates the same scheme on the page after the passage above. A dignified Jupiter is read as giving its gifts easily; a debilitated one is read as growth that takes more effort, not as bad luck.

Your Jupiter return

Every 11.9 years or so, Jupiter comes back to the sign and degree it held when you were born. Astrologers call this your Jupiter return and read it as a fresh twelve-year chapter: a good time to start, study, travel or expand. Many astrologers read it together with that year’s solar return. It falls near ages 12, 24, 36, 47, 59, 71 and 83.

Timeline of Jupiter returns at ages 11.9, 23.7, 35.6, 47.4, 59.3, 71.1 and 83.0 years after birth
Jupiter comes back to its birth position about every 11.9 years. Calculated by Numyra from the NASA tropical orbit period.

Jupiter is in Leo from June 30, 2026 to July 26, 2027, so anyone born with Jupiter in Leo has a return during that time, on the day Jupiter reaches their exact birth degree:

Born between Return Age
July 16, 2014 and August 11, 2015 1st about 12
August 1, 2002 and August 27, 2003 2nd about 24
August 18, 1990 and September 12, 1991 3rd about 36
September 5, 1978 and February 28, 1979; April 20 and September 29, 1979 4th about 48
September 27, 1966 and January 15, 1967; May 23 and October 19, 1967; February 26 and June 15, 1968 5th about 60
June 12 and November 16, 1955; January 17 and July 7, 1956 6th about 71
June 30, 1943 and July 25, 1944 7th about 83

The broken date ranges are retrograde loops: in those years Jupiter left Leo, slipped back into it, and left again.

Where Jupiter is now

As of early October 2026, Jupiter is at about 21° Leo. It turns retrograde on December 12, 2026 at 27° Leo, turns direct on April 12, 2027 at 17° Leo, and enters Virgo on July 26, 2027, where it stays until August 24, 2028. The Moon passes it every month; our Moon in Leo guide lists when.

Frequently asked questions

What does my Jupiter sign mean?

It is read as the style of your growth, generosity and luck: where you are inclined to expand, take chances and look for meaning. Because Jupiter stays about a year in each sign, it is shared by everyone born in roughly the same year, so astrologers also look at its house.

How do I find my Jupiter sign?

Look up your birth date in the table of Jupiter sign changes above, or enter it in our stellium calculator. You only need a birth time if you were born on the day Jupiter changed sign.

Is Jupiter in Sagittarius lucky?

Tradition reads it as one of Jupiter’s strongest placements, because Sagittarius is Jupiter’s own sign. That is a traditional score, not a guarantee of luck; astrologers read it as optimism and opportunity that come more easily.

Which Jupiter sign is the best?

By traditional scoring, Sagittarius and Pisces (Jupiter’s homes) and Cancer (its exaltation) are strongest, and Gemini, Virgo and Capricorn weakest. Modern astrologers stress that every placement has its own strengths.

Is everyone born in the same year the same Jupiter sign?

Mostly. Jupiter changes sign about once a year, but rarely on January 1, so a calendar year usually splits between two Jupiter signs, and in retrograde years three.

How long does Jupiter stay in a sign?

About a year on average, but it varies: roughly 320 days in Aries and 396 in Virgo, because Jupiter moves faster when it is closer to the Sun.

When is my Jupiter return?

Near ages 12, 24, 36, 47, 59, 71 and 83, when Jupiter comes back to its position at your birth. Anyone born with Jupiter in Leo has one between June 30, 2026 and July 26, 2027.
