Your Saturn sign is the zodiac sign Saturn was in when you were born. Astrologers read it as where you meet limits, take on responsibility and slowly build mastery. Saturn takes about 29.4 years to circle the zodiac, so it stays two to three years in each sign: everyone born within the same couple of years shares a Saturn sign. Find yours in the table of every Saturn sign change from 1930 to 2030 below.
Key takeaways
- You only need your birth date to find your Saturn sign. A birth time matters only if you were born on one of the days Saturn changed sign.
- Saturn does not spend equal time in every sign: about 1,023 days in Capricorn but only 774 in Gemini, because its oval orbit makes it slowest on the far side from the Sun (Swiss Ephemeris, 1800–2199).
- Tradition makes Saturn strongest in Capricorn and Aquarius (its homes) and Libra (its exaltation), and weakest in Cancer, Leo and Aries.
- Your Saturn sign is the sign Saturn comes back to at your Saturn return, around ages 27 to 29. Saturn is in Aries until April 12, 2028.
- Readings of each sign are an astrological tradition, offered for reflection, not as life or career advice.

What your Saturn sign means
Saturn is traditionally the “greater malefic”, the harder of astrology’s two difficult planets (Mars is the other). It is read as time, limits, structure, duty, fear and, eventually, mastery: the things you have to work at rather than the things that come easily. Your Saturn sign describes the style of that work, where you are cautious, where you feel tested, and where patient effort is said to pay off most. Ptolemy explained Saturn’s cold reputation by its distance:
“It is Saturn’s quality chiefly to cool and, moderately, to dry, probably because he is furthest removed both from the sun’s heat and the moist exhalations about the earth.”
Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos, Book I, chapter 4, trans. F. E. Robbins (1940)
Because Saturn moves so slowly, it is often called a social or generational planet: it describes a mood shared by everyone born in the same stretch of two or three years, and astrologers make it personal through its house and its contacts with your other placements. Modern astrology softens Saturn’s old reputation considerably, reading it less as misfortune and more as the planet of earned results. In a reading it comes after your Jupiter sign, its expansive counterpart, and the personal planets: Mercury, Venus and Mars.

How to find your Saturn sign
Find the last date in the table below that falls on or before your birthday; the sign on that row is your Saturn sign. For example, someone born on June 17, 1990 looks back to November 12, 1988, when Saturn re-entered Capricorn after a short retrograde dip into Sagittarius. Saturn did not move on into Aquarius until February 6, 1991, so their Saturn sign is Capricorn, Saturn’s own sign. You only need a birth time if you were born on the day of a change.
Our stellium calculator also lists the sign of Saturn and every other planet for any birth date, and our birth chart calculator adds your Moon, rising sign and Midheaven.

Why Saturn stays longer in some signs
NASA’s Saturn fact sheet gives its tropical period, one full lap of the zodiac, as 10,746.9 days, or 29.4 years. William Lilly’s figure in 1647 was 29 years and 157 days, within about two days of the modern number, as our Saturn return guide shows. Divided by twelve, that is about 2.45 years per sign, but Saturn’s orbit is slightly oval: it comes within 1,357.6 million km of the Sun at perihelion and swings out to 1,506.5 million km at aphelion. Planets move fastest close to the Sun, and Saturn’s perihelion lies at about 92° of longitude, early Cancer, so it hurries through Gemini and Cancer and crawls through Sagittarius and Capricorn on the far side. Over the 400 years from 1800 to 2199, Saturn spent:

| Sign | Days per visit, on average | Years | Share of all days, 1800–2199 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 832 | 2.3 | 7.7% |
| Taurus | 791 | 2.2 | 7.4% |
| Gemini | 774 | 2.1 | 7.2% |
| Cancer | 775 | 2.1 | 7.2% |
| Leo | 837 | 2.3 | 7.8% |
| Virgo | 894 | 2.4 | 8.3% |
| Libra | 938 | 2.6 | 8.7% |
| Scorpio | 989 | 2.7 | 9.2% |
| Sagittarius | 1,011 | 2.8 | 9.4% |
| Capricorn | 1,023 | 2.8 | 9.5% |
| Aquarius | 992 | 2.7 | 9.2% |
| Pisces | 890 | 2.4 | 8.3% |
Retrograde loops add to the picture: each year Saturn appears to move backward for about four and a half months, and when that loop straddles a sign boundary, Saturn dips back into the previous sign, which is why a single birth year can have two Saturn signs.

Saturn in each of the 12 signs
These are the common traditional readings, a starting point rather than a verdict. Saturn’s house in your chart says where the lesson plays out; our guide to the houses explains how those are set.
Saturn in Aries (fall)
Tradition places Saturn in its fall in Aries, opposite its exaltation in Libra: the planet of patience in the sign of haste. It is read as lessons about self-reliance and timing, learning to act without rushing and to lead without forcing. People with this placement are often described as building courage the slow way, through tests they would rather have skipped. Saturn is in Aries now, until April 2028.
Saturn in Taurus
Saturn in Taurus is read as lessons about security, money and the body. It is careful with resources and slow to trust easy gains, and the traditional fear is scarcity. Its strength is endurance: this placement is said to build wealth, skills and habits steadily and keep them.
Saturn in Gemini
Saturn in Gemini is read as discipline of the mind: a serious learner, a careful speaker and writer, someone who checks the facts. The traditional fear is of not knowing enough or sounding foolish. Saturn moves fastest through Gemini and Cancer, staying about 2.1 years.
Saturn in Cancer (detriment)
Tradition places Saturn in detriment in Cancer, opposite its home sign Capricorn. It is read as lessons around home, family and emotional safety: often someone who took on family responsibility early and finds it hard to be looked after. The growth is learning that needing care is not a weakness.
Saturn in Leo (detriment)
Saturn is also in detriment in Leo, opposite its other home sign, Aquarius. It is read as lessons about self-expression and recognition: a fear of being judged when seen, met by working hard at a craft until the confidence is earned. Many with this placement are described as serious about creative work.
Saturn in Virgo
Saturn in Virgo is read as precision, method and high standards in work and health: someone who builds good systems and notices every flaw. The traditional caution is perfectionism and worry. Its strength is reliable, careful work that holds up.
Saturn in Libra (exaltation)
Tradition places Saturn’s exaltation in Libra, one of its strongest positions. It is read as seriousness about fairness, commitment and agreements: contracts honored, relationships treated as responsibilities, a strong sense of justice. The traditional caution is coldness or keeping score in partnerships.
Saturn in Scorpio
Saturn in Scorpio is read as depth, control and endurance: slow to trust, careful with shared money and secrets, able to carry heavy things through a crisis. The traditional fear is of vulnerability. The growth is letting control go once trust has been earned.
Saturn in Sagittarius
Saturn in Sagittarius is read as earning wisdom rather than borrowing it: questioning beliefs, testing ideas, taking education seriously. The traditional caution is cynicism or rigid principles. Saturn moves slowly here, staying about 2.8 years.
Saturn in Capricorn (domicile)
Capricorn is Saturn’s night house, so tradition reads Saturn as at home and strong here: ambitious, responsible, patient, with a natural feel for structure and authority. The traditional caution is rigidity, or valuing achievement over people. Saturn spends longer in Capricorn than in any other sign, about 1,023 days.
Saturn in Aquarius (domicile)
Aquarius is Saturn’s day house, and Lilly says Saturn “rejoyceth” in it. Saturn here is read as discipline in the service of principles, groups and systems: a reformer who builds lasting structures. Modern astrologers give Aquarius to Uranus but keep Saturn as its traditional ruler.
Saturn in Pisces
Saturn in Pisces is read as giving shape to imagination and compassion: boundaries learned the hard way, and spiritual or creative work given real discipline. The traditional fear is chaos or losing oneself. The strength is turning vision into something practical.
Saturn’s house, in brief
Because millions of people share a Saturn sign, astrologers often weigh Saturn’s house more heavily, and the house needs your birth time. These are the short traditional readings:
| Saturn in the | Traditionally read as |
|---|---|
| 1st house | A serious, reserved first impression; self-discipline; often described as older when young and ageing well. |
| 2nd house | Careful with money and possessions; security built slowly and kept. |
| 3rd house | A careful speaker and writer; early schooling or siblings as a source of lessons. |
| 4th house | Responsibility for home and family; a sense of belonging built later in life. |
| 5th house | Creativity, romance and play taken seriously; having fun is something learned. |
| 6th house | A strong work ethic; routines, service and health habits as the training ground. |
| 7th house | Commitment in partnership; traditionally late marriage or an older partner. |
| 8th house | Lessons around shared money, debt, trust and intimacy. |
| 9th house | Beliefs tested and rebuilt; higher education earned the hard way. |
| 10th house | Career and reputation built slowly toward real authority; see our Midheaven guide. |
| 11th house | Few friendships but lasting ones; responsibility within groups. |
| 12th house | Private fears, solitude and inner discipline; see our 12th house guide. |
Where tradition says Saturn is strongest
Lilly sets out Saturn’s dignities in one sentence:
“In the Zodiack he hath two of the twelve Signs for his Houses, viz. Capricorne his Night-house, Aquarius his Day-house”
William Lilly, Christian Astrology, London, 1647, chapter VIII, p. 57 (Lilly prints each sign’s glyph after its name)

He continues that Saturn is exalted in Libra and has its fall in Aries. Its detriments follow by symmetry: Cancer and Leo, the signs opposite its homes. In the scoring system called essential dignities, a dignified Saturn is read as discipline that comes naturally, and a debilitated one as discipline that has to be learned. Neither is read as fate.

Your Saturn sign and your Saturn return
Your Saturn return is simply Saturn coming back to the sign and degree it held when you were born. It reaches your Saturn sign at about 27 or 28 and your exact degree at 28 or 29, then returns again around 58. Our Saturn return guide covers the ages and who is having one in 2026, and the Saturn return calculator gives your exact dates from your birth date. Saturn is in Aries now, so people born with Saturn in Aries, roughly from spring 1996 to spring 1999 and from early 1967 to spring 1969, are in their return.
Where Saturn is now
Saturn entered Aries on May 24, 2025, dipped back into Pisces from September 1, 2025, and re-entered Aries on February 13, 2026 (Eastern time). As of early October 2026 it is retrograde at about 11° Aries. It turns direct on December 10, 2026 at 8° Aries, goes retrograde again on August 9, 2027 at 28° Aries, turns direct on December 23, 2027, and enters Taurus on April 12, 2028, where it stays until May 31, 2030. Aries is Saturn’s fall, so astrologers read this stretch as a test of patience for everyone.
Frequently asked questions
What does my Saturn sign mean?
It is read as where you meet limits and responsibility and slowly build mastery: the style of your discipline and your fears. Because Saturn stays two to three years in each sign, it is shared by everyone born in the same few years, so astrologers also look at its house.
How do I find my Saturn sign?
Look up your birth date in the table of Saturn sign changes above, or enter it in our stellium calculator. You only need a birth time if you were born on the day Saturn changed sign.
In which sign is Saturn good?
By traditional scoring, Saturn is strongest in Capricorn and Aquarius, the signs it rules, and in Libra, its exaltation. It is weakest in Cancer and Leo (detriment) and Aries (fall). Modern astrologers stress that every placement can be worked with.
Is Aquarius a Saturn sign?
Yes, in traditional astrology. Saturn rules both Capricorn and Aquarius; Lilly calls Aquarius Saturn’s day house. Since the discovery of Uranus in 1781, many modern astrologers give Aquarius to Uranus instead, but most still list Saturn as its traditional ruler.
How long does Saturn stay in a sign?
About two and a half years on average, but it varies: roughly 774 days in Gemini and 1,023 in Capricorn, because Saturn moves faster when it is closer to the Sun.
Is Saturn a bad planet in astrology?
Traditional astrology called it the greater malefic, the planet of hardship and delay. Modern astrologers read it more as the planet of structure, responsibility and results that are earned over time, uncomfortable but useful.
What is the rarest Saturn sign?
Gemini and Cancer, because Saturn moves fastest through them: about 774 and 775 days per visit, against 1,023 in Capricorn. Over the long run, Saturn spends 7.2% of its time in Gemini and 9.5% in Capricorn.
Can I have the same Saturn sign as my parents?
Yes, if one of them was born about 29 years before you: that is one full Saturn cycle, so Saturn was back in the same sign. A parent born 28 to 31 years earlier quite often shares your Saturn sign.
What is the difference between a Saturn sign and a Saturn return?
Your Saturn sign is where Saturn was when you were born. Your Saturn return is the period around age 27 to 29 when Saturn comes back to that same place.
